BusinessWeek Rates Top 50 Companies

Popularity: 35%

BusinessWeek recently came up with their BusinessWeek 50 list, which represents their choice of the “best in class” companies from the 10 economic sectors that make up the S&P 500. Essentially, BusinessWeek has short-listed companies based on 2 main factors;

* Average return on capital and sales growth
* A comparative analysis of companies with peers in their sectors

Personally I find this methodology of ranking quite interesting because it allows comparatively smaller companies to rank well against traditionally ‘bigger’ firms which are in other ‘profitable’ sectors. A quick look at the top 10 list will surely convey my feeling. There are many companies in the top 10 which I was quite surprised to find there, and even companies which I had never heard of earlier. Although, my guess of Google being numero uno was quite bang on! (Seems Big ‘G’ wants to be #1 everywhere!)
