Jawed Karim : The 3rd of YouTube.com’s Three Founders
Ohh Yeah, there is one more ‘King Ka-ching’ behind the whole $1.65bn YouTube.com acquisition by the Big G. Like most of the people(including my friend Kedar) , I too have been closely following the Google takeover, and there is a whole lot being said about the deal. But very few people actually know that there is a 3rd founder involved with the YouTube team.
Yes, Jawed Karim, who acted as an Advisor to the YouTube.com team was actually the 1st person who came up with the idea of having a site where people could share videos. Although Jawed missed much of the limelight and media attention that the Steven and Chad got, he was still laughing his way to the bank. As per Jawed, who refuses to reveal how much he made from the deal, he is one of the company’s largest individual shareholders, though he owns less of the company than his two partners, whose stakes in the company are likely to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, according to some estimates. The deal was so enormous, he says, that his share was still plenty big.
“The sheer size of the acquisition almost makes the details irrelevant” - is what Jawed said, and don’t we all agree !!
Jawed has had an illustrious career and you can read more about him here - Jawed Karim
I first got to know about Jawed from Ken McCarthy at his system video blog. He blogs about the 1st You tube video ever uploaded (that was by Jawed). Also check out his post on Google’s take over of YouTube.com, after all the various ‘I blogged about that’ posts, this would come as a good change. This guy is one of the foremost Internet marketers who worked with Marc Andreessen of Netscape fame, and knows his stuff ! For starters, how many of you knew that Sequoia Capital put in $11.5 million for a 30% stake in YouTube? Payback: $495 million in Google stock. A 42,043% return in one year !!!
Also checkout CNBC’s interview with Jawed Karim after the takeover. Jawed must be chilling at the Stanford campus (where he is completing his MS) with all those newly found millions …
