And the Queen turns 80 …
Normally, an event like ‘The Queen’s Birthday’ would not make news for an Indian like me, but having moved to London you cannot help but stand up and take notice as the whole of England gathers up to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
Well, yes on 21st April, 2006 and the Queen of England turned 80 !
(Trivia - Did you know the Queen has two birthdays? The Queen turned 80 on 21 April 2006, but will celebrate her official birthday on 17 June 2006. Read more : One Queen, Two Birthdays)
The queen was greeted by thousands of fans outside the Windsor castle.
The great-grandmother from Oswestry, Shropshire, found it all quite emotional. “I’ve shed a few tears today,” she confessed. “It’s something I’ll never experience again - well, not until I’m 90, maybe,” she added, hopefully. “It’s absolutely wonderful. I’ve had a good life - nothing out of the ordinary. But this means everything to be here today.”
The British Monarchy website has been redone to reflect a birthday theme.
What caught my eye was : 80 facts about The Queen which includes ….
* She sent her first e-mail from an army base in 1976.
* Has received bizarre gifts such as 7kg of prawns, sloths, pineapples and a box of snail shells !
* She has distributed 78,000 Christmas puddings to her staff.
* Elizabeth has 30 godchildren !
…. and much more. (facts I mean !)
So long, as they say … Long live the Queen !

Hey the 80 facts about the Queen were really interesting. This one was particularly funny - “Tony Blair is the first Prime Minister to have been born during The Queen’s reign. He was born in early May 1953 - a month before the Coronation.” (Although I don’t know how ‘born a month before the coronation’ can count as being born DURING the reign…)
But in a debate between Blair and the Queen over some national policy, the Queen can always have the last word by saying, “I know better! When I started running this country, you were moving around in a pram sucking on your pacifier!” hahahah
