Moving towards Intuitive Search

University of New South Wales PhD student, Ori Allon, has invented a method of exploring the web, which is claimed could revolutionize existing search results.

The search engine, called Orion, finds pages where the content is about a topic strongly related to the keyword.

Instead of just returning just a snippet (the brief info/description that is displayed for a webpage in normal SE’s), Orion returns a section of the relevant page and also lists other topics related to that particular keyword. The user can now select the most relevant results in context of what they are searching for.

Citing an example in Allon’s own words …

“The results to the query are displayed immediately in the form of expanded text extracts, giving you the relevant information without having to go the website - although you still have that option if you wish” explained Ori Allon. “Take a search such as the American Revolution as an example of how the system works. Orion would bring up results with extracts containing this phrase. But it would also give results for American History, George Washington, American Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, Boston Tea Party and more. You obtain much more valuable information from every search.”

The futuristic text search algorithm which was pitted as a major acquisition target, has indeed been acquired. Ori’s invention drew the Big 3 - Google, Yahoo and Microsoft - into negotiations. Infact, at one point of time, Bill Gates (as quoted in Forbes magazine) said that we need to take the search way beyond how people think of it today. We believe that Orion will do that.

Latest news confirm that Google has successfully acquired the technology. Although, the rights of ownership remains with NSW, Ori Allon has officially joined Google HQ !

Let’s wait and watch how Allon’s text search algorithm gets integrated with Google Search.
