50% Reservation for OBC’s - A Calamitous Proposition

It is such a shame that ministers like Arjun Singh and others who side with him (read wierdos) will do anything to woo the backward classes of India. Just becuase the OBC’s form a sizeable chunk of the voting population, these losers will put the entire nation at stake to make sure they have their ‘khursis’ under their shitty ass !

In one of the most recent propositions, they plan to increase the already high (27%) OBC quota in premiere educational istitutes to a whopping 50% !

I decided to write on this topic after it became a huge debate in the yahoo grp. I belong to.

Here is a link to an online petition against the proposed reservation. Please sign it and help the cause.

Following is a rather long discussion we had in the group. I am deleting the names of the individuals to protect their identities.

Is it just me or does everyone think that 50% reservation will put us back to an era that even precedes the stone age. What are these guys thinking? And is there anyway to stop it? Students in Delhi have started an SMS campaign. I don’t know what we can do but I do know that if enough voices are raised then we can make a difference. It maybe the Rang De Basanti Syndrome but then the Jesica Lall case shows how public opinion and strength does matter. The resolution has not passed yet. And it does not affect any of us who have finished our MBAs and education. but that does not mean we be lax about this. I heard about this only today. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not one to go forward with my sword. But I really don’t want to take this lying down.

Suggestions??

I think it’d be insane if such a bill is passed !

I doubt of they’ll actually pass it … its sure to recieve
an opposition.

KS wrote :

I doubt if there will be ANY opposition to the bill at all. After all, the OBCs form the majority of the vote banks of the parties who are going to pass / oppose this bill. As such, the bill, proposed by the Human Resource ‘Development’ minister Arjun Singh, has faced no opposition from any political party yet. Even the constitution has been ammended for this purpose. My only hope is pinned on the likes of Dr Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram to take up a firm stand and oppose the bill. But I won’t be surprised if they to wince under the pressure from their own party…

This whole OBC, SC, ST quota thing is non-sense. I remember, during our engg admissions, the Gujarat topper from CBSE could not get a seat in Nirma IT because there was just one seat for CBSE, which was gifted on a silver platter to a bloody OBC!! I don’t want to see that happening to the topper of CAT…

MG wrote :

Nothing against people from OBC, and I understand that history has not been kind to them, but for god’s sakes you cant come up with a bill as stupid as that. This is like the mandal crap that VP singh came up with. And people from OBC’s better understand that they are not improving, its just that standards are being lowerd considerably to accomodate them, all this in the name of politics. The people will not take it lying down, i hope.

Its times like these when i think that the rang de basanti solution seems to be the best option to get rid of the assholes in the parlament.

SP wrote :

ok .. is there anything that we can do ?

half of us are not even in india .. but rather than just commenting can some1 think if anything can be done?

we dont really have a blog network … otherwise we can post it on blogs … we can send out chain mails like crazy .. anything else …?

its better to think of ways in which we can do something rather than just discuss what is goin to happen …. ‘coz i know none of us is goin to do a rang de basanti !

KS wrote :

You can’t do anything… The people who are going to take a decision have been put there to take a decision by us. All the people who run blogs and write chain mails. Because these people DO NOT vote. which allows the likes of Arjun Singh and VP Singh to get into power and do whatever they please…

SP wrote :

abey i don’t understand why are u guys lamenting over spilled milk .. whatz done is done, jo gandu saale elect ho gaye so ho gaye ..

i m making a clear statement and that is .. Is there anything that we can do NOW?

if yes, how/what?

if no, which is what i read from ks’s mail … lets put an end to this !

AD wrote :

I know people have stopped talking about this topic, but I am just going to add a thought to it.

Like kadu says, I agree we should vote … but for whom …. the vote if not goes towards the blind goes towards a patch-eyed politician. It doesnt help much.

Real good will only come if we the educated ones are ready to dirty our hands in politics … india doesnt need an increase in killings like rang de basanti … rather needs people to take up the responsibility like Gandhi did once …

We have to trigger a change in thinking of youths … too long we have just waited and watched … too long we have done nothing and suffered … too long we have just thought about ourselves …

I often wish that I would be in a position to do that …. unfortunately its just a dream that I have been waiting to realize ….

so when people wonder what can be done … i would say we can pass the word around … power of media is most powerful …. people should make use of it …

That is our best bet against such foolish ammendments …

SP wrote :

its far better to take action ourselves than to trigger the thought in the youth …

AD … reg. ur statement “I often wish that I would be in a position to do that …. unfortunately its just a dream that I have been waiting to realize ….”

nothin against AD or anyone else .. but i just feel we are too selfish and in a way ‘too practical’ .. that wud be a term that wud help justify our decisions … to consider ourselves not in a position to help any cause related to india … there are 100’s like us talkin in similar grps just crying foul …. ‘coz we feel we are not suited to realise a dream … for argument sake …. we cud fly down to india next week and start a campaign … but who would?? we are more worried about our incomes, our careers, etc. and thatz okay … but i feel if that is okay .. we are in no psoition to act scholars and start debating on how to run our country !

we are a part of indian youth and feel that we are in no position to help the cause …

how do u think we validate ourselves into making the general youth to take action???

we cant say .. hey dude … u r in india … and i m in the usa/uk .. so its not that we dont understand the problem but its just that we want u to put ur ass on the line !

anyways, i dont know why but this is becomin too sensitive a topic to keep debating … so if ppl don’t end it i’ll just limit myself !

MG wrote :

well i guess everyone is taking out their “bhadas” on the system. But SP is right, what are we doing to stop all this nonsense, practically speaking? political reform is a process, and vigilante justice or revolutionary measures, usually make a country more unstable rather than helping it out. I was thinking about what gotu was saying, and then i thought, the indian democracy is just about 60 years old, when i think of all successful democracies I realise that India was possibly the most vibrant, of course most populus and poorest country in the world at the time of independence.

In 60 yrs we have gotten this far. Politics is a process, i agree we had a good begining and a very bad 30-35 years, but things are changing, and that’s what counts. Today most of the youth in india are talking about things that should change, this is unlike any period in our history, the mass media and general level of political awareness is at an all time high in the country, more people than ever before realise that whatever politicians do affects us directly. and this awareness is just going to increase with time as people get educated, as the various sources of media reach the remotest villages. That is the kind of change we need, we need a movement, not a revolution, a revolution will only destabilize us,a movement will shift equations in the long run.

Compared to India, In the US, after 60 years of independence, people still could legally have slaves(infact this is one of the factors that triggered the civil war.) . just 30 years ago, racial inequality was at an all time high in the US, some parts of the US were lawless for long time. But the changes came gradually as people understood what their rights were and the power of true democracy. Isnt this true for every successful democracy ? Change was gradual not sudden and that’s what ingrained the true values of democracy in the citizens, made people aware, made them powerful.

Havent we done much better than the best you can think of ?? look at where we started 60 yrs ago, look where we are now. Maybe these discussions are exactly what we need. Maybe what you and i can do is make people aware of their rights and make them realise that the actions of the politicians in delhi affect us all. Maybe we need to talk about this relentlessly, not only among ourselves or on a blog, but with people who havent realised whats going on. Maybe what we need to do is start a movement, not a revolution.

I may be a lil late in the entire discussions, but better late than never. This entire reservation thing made up an interesting piece of reading. MG’s comparison with the US and SP’s practical take on the situation made me track the entire chain of mails …….right from where LG started!

Sorry to add this when the entire discussion has been closed………but when you pour water over fire, theres bound to be some smoke, so take the drag. Here is my take on it ……..

India is sick of three Ps - Population, Poverty, and Politics and they all come together. Sounds like Shikha mam’s economics lecture ……..but this is reality.

A coalition government has no option but to keep all the interested parties happy and what best than to keep the poor man happy (the Left) cos that makes the vote bank!

So we have reservations for OBCs/ BCs, and all sorts of special treatment etc coming from the government. But when we say the government lets not blame all and sundry running this great country. That ain’t fair guys!

Their are people who believe in doing more than reservations, people who think that opening up schools in backward areas is a better way of spreading education than give preferntial treatment in those existing institutions. People who think that the long road takes you a longer distance!!

But who is to be blamed for why a bunch of fools can manipulate the entire system!
Its we do make them reach there, either by voting or not voting….

Population has ensured a rat race that we are all so bloody caught up with our lives that we have forgotten to look beyond ourselves….. How many of us have voted in the last 5 years……..I haven’t and am bloody ashamed of not having done that.

But face it people…….We are too much into securing ourselves, to act in a manner which will do common good, beyond us.

This reservations thing has always been there and each science student has faced it! So what did we guys do then……..took the easy way out ………move to a different state, migrate to the US! Who had the bloody time to fight…..but now when we see something more unfair happening…….khoon khaul raha hai……..’DJ’ yaad aaa raha hai!

How many of us have taken the time out to voice what we think ……..i have read only a — few names here– talking about it! And belive it or not 4 out of these 6 people are oustide India……hits in the gut right…….Whats happened to the remaining 36 odd people on the group……

GJ ( I am pulling u up here cos ur a good friend, have nothing against u and cos lots on the group tend to take me as an arrogant snob….so not to tread in troubled waters) you have the time to post mails and blogs but not one ounce of thought! Why are you shying away dude……..You never know when a spark left somewhere can make a great bonfire!!

But yes, for those who are far and away…..things are changing……People like Manmohan and APJ at the top is an indicator of this change……….but its a long way before we see India painted with the color of our dreams! Before we Paint it Yellow !(English version of ‘Rang De Basanti’)

Face it………none of us are making it to the politics……..JK sorry to dishearten you!!! And even if we do, by the time we make it there to change things for the better, things would have worstened beyond repair.
So whats a better way to make India a better place………instill the faith into this country’s democracy…….I have just one idea…….lets become aware about our rights and exercise them when we need to. Lets vote! Lets voice our opinion………let the ass holes know what the common man thinks !

Untill a few years, Indians were not allowed to hoist the national flag, until one person made it his bloody business to ensure that all Indians were given this right!

I don’t see a DJ in anyone of us but neither of us wanna be Sukhi!!

Lets start making that extra effort to change things around us! Lets start driving and stop being driven! Lets be responsible for the people we choose and lets strip the people who we consider worthless of their powers.

My take on the reservation thing……..Its a political gimmick to lure the Left. The wiser definitely are trading it for something better……..and we have elections in 5 states around the corner!!

I hope reservations are not here to stay!!

It is a matter of great shame that most of you people are taking it lying down. Please leave the comforts of your home and get on the streets to protest against this sick reservation policy. The government will not see your blog. If you are interested in making a difference then get on the streets and fight the enemy. Only 1000 students protesting reservation, what the hell. Is this the number of students that oppose reservation? If you oppose it then show it.

IT IS GREAT SHAME ON RESERVATION, SINCE RESERVATION IS NOT GOING TO REALLY NEEDED PERSONS.ONLY EDUCATED AND RICH OBC, SC ARE ENJOYING THEIR PREVILAGE GENERATION BY GENERATION.IF THE PERSON HAS BEOME EDUCATIONAL WELL QUALIFIED LIKE ENGGIEER, OR DOCTOR OR LAWYAROF OBC, AND SC THEY SHOULD NOT ASK FOR CONTINUE OF RESERVATION.NOWADAYS THEY ARE FORMING POLITICAL PARTIES OF THEIR OWN AND THEY ARE TELLING THAT THEY ARE FIGHTING FOR LEGITIMATE RIGHTS.
THESE PETTY MINDED ACTIVITIES ARE GOING ON TAMILNADU POLITICS.IT IS VERY SELFISH MINDED AND ASHAMEFUL IF HE IS TAKING RICE FOOD..EVEN A DOCTOR OBC, AND THEIR ENTIRE FAMILY IS A DOCTOR THEY ARE FIGHTING FOR RESERVATION.
THERE MUST BE CHECK ON IT. ON EDUCATED RICH OBC, BY INTRODUCING INCOME LIMIT FOR AVAILING RESERVATION BENEFICTS.
AND IN POLITICS THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY RACISAMS AGAINST CASTE LIKE ANTI HINDU AND ANTI BRAHAMINS.THESE REGIONAL PARTIES ARE THEMSELVES CREATING AND DIVIDING HINDU SOCEITY FOR WANT OF VOTES, PROCLAIMING STATE HAS GOT 88% BACKWARD PEOPLE.NO FOOL CAN BELEIVE IT.THESE REGIONAL BASED POLITICAL PARTIES ARE INFORMING SUPREME COURT LIKE THIS.
THIS IS NOT BAD PRECEDENT THIS IS ARROGANT PRECEDDENT.
I REQUEST REGIONAL PARTIES OF TN TO TREAT ALL HUMAN BEINGS SAME.PLEASE ADOPT INCOME LIMIT FOR OBC, AND SC RESERVATION.
